Rode an ATV across the shortgrass prairie all afternoon. Searching for Bobwhite Quail habitat.
It was very liberating, and at times scary. When they say ATV, they mean all terrain. I rode through dunes, the red dirt which is so proudly Oklahoman, fields of wheat, sagebrush riddled pathways with such sweet smells… It was an amazing day. A whitetail doe ran beside me behind a barbed-wire fence before jumping across my path, and I moved a box turtle from the middle of the road to a safe new habitat.
Unfortunately, no quail sightings still. They are a very cryptic animal. However, I heard a handful. It’s so sad that no one knows what is destabilizing these little guys. Lots of the quail we’re tracking are found dead of unknown cause…seriously.
This has been a boring post. I’m not sorry, though.
